EXMOOR COTTAGE HOLIDAYS
Romantic holidays, short stays and weekend breaks for couples are very popular in North Devon and Exmoor because of the stunning coastline and countryside; the peace and quiet; slow pace of life and easy access from the motorway network, Cornwall, the Midlands and the South East.
Exmoor Cottage Holidays is ideal for couples wanting a romantic getaway holiday or short break in charming and peaceful surroundings. The five stone cottages, all with real log fires and private gardens, have been converted from a medieval farm and are characterful, comfortable, well-equipped, and surrounded by large enchanting grounds.
Romantic holidays for couples are stress free at Exmoor Cottage Holidays. The beds are made with fresh linen when you arrive and on colder days we will ensure that the cottage is warm and cosy. There is a welcome pack with some essentials (tea, coffee, milk, sugar, cleaning materials, dustbin bag and cloths) and some necessities that you might forget (soap, shampoo, conditioner and toilet roll). Our prices include electricity for lighting and heating, and a first basket of logs and kindling for the fire.
We offer a beautiful place to stay with a special atmosphere. Every cottage has a private enclosed garden with a picnic table and bird-feeder (filled most days). There is a delightful walk around Humphrey's Hill with lovely views over Exmoor, and a wild-flower meadow ideal for exercising your dogs.
We are around most days to help with any enquiries. We have a good knowledge of Exmoor and North Devon and will happily point out the most romantic places to visit on an OS map, which you may borrow. We can help you light your log burning stove and show you how to keep it going; recommend local services (e.g. taxi, good restaurants, sight-seeing tours, sea-trips, best cream tea, etc.); and usually have some special deals available just for our guests. We also offer (charged extra) towel hire, logs and kindling, cottage cleaning and a service wash and dry so that you can get the most out of your romantic holidays.
The cottages are in the peaceful village of Challacombe, within the Exmoor National Park. There are excellent walks in the village: to the local church through a delightful beech forest; to pretty Bray Reservoir, source of the river Bray; to atmospheric Pinkery Pond, source of the river Barle; to Chapmans Barrows and the quincunx, dating from the Bronze Age; and to Shoulsbury Castle, a large Iron-Age hillfort, where on a fine day you can see right over the Taw and Torridge estuary to Lundy Island, about 30 miles away. You can bring your dogs with you, rather than worry about them staying with friends, or in kennels.
Within 300 yards of the cottages is a traditional inn with award-winning home made food, good wines and real ales; and a friendly shop and Post Office with groceries, excellent cakes, wines, and lovely clotted cream teas. For serious pampering and together time there is a spa within 100 yards, with limited availability, for holistic treatments.
There are lots of interesting places to enjoy a romantic day out in Exmoor and North Devon, for example the attractive Victorian seaside town of Instow, where you can catch the ferry to Appledore which has charming winding narrow streets; the historic harbour of Ilfracombe, where there has been a lantern for over 1000 years, and where Damien Hirst's new sculpture Verity rivals the Angel of the North (and is slightly taller!); medieval Dunster with an impressive castle, C16th Yarn Market and C13th dovecote; the Valley of Rocks, with some spectacular rock formations and a large community of wild goats; and the privately owned fishing village Clovelly, which must be one of the steepest villages in the country.
You are spoilt for a choice of excellent places to go for a romantic dinner. The Black Venus Inn in the village has award-winning food and is only a few minutes' walk; Nearby is The Exmoor Forest Inn in Simonsbath, which does an amazing Sunday roast, and The Fox & Goose Inn in Parracombe with lovely steaks and fish stew (John's favourite); and The Chichester Arms in Bishops Tawton has a great roast available all Sunday afternoon. If you don't want to use your car, a taxi service is available in the village.
The cottages at Exmoor Cottage Holidays are ideal for romantic holidays for couples in Exmoor and North Devon being easy to reach, well-appointed, in peaceful charming surroundings, with a short walk to a local pub and in an excellent central position to explore Exmoor National Park and the spectacular North Devon and Somerset coastline.
