EXMOOR COTTAGE HOLIDAYS
Golfing holidays are very popular in North Devon, which has some of the oldest and most spectacular golf courses (including links courses) in the UK.
If you enjoy golfing holidays but don't want to stay in the busy crowded resorts, then Exmoor Cottage Holidays, in the peaceful village of Challacombe and within the Exmoor National Park, is ideal for you. The five stone-built cottages are full of charm and character, all have log fires, and they are surrounded by large enchanting grounds. The cottages are only a short walk from an award-winning pub, and half-an-hours drive from several premier golf courses, including a few that have been established for over 100 years (Ilfracombe, Saunton and the Royal North Devon).
The charming holiday cottages are ideal for golfing holidays and short breaks, being only 50 minutes from the motorway network and the M5. The local pub serves excellent home-made food and real ales and is only two minutes away. Next to the pub is a local shop, with groceries, alcohol and snacks, where you can have a lovely clotted cream tea. You can arrange with the shop (or the local Sainsburys or Tesco in Barnstaple) to have groceries delivered ready for your arrival.
We offer a beautiful place to stay and visit most days to help with any enquiries (and feed the birds). We have a good knowledge of Exmoor and North Devon and are happy to point out the best places to visit on an OS map (which you may borrow). We can show you how to light your log fire and keep it going; recommend local services (e.g. taxi, good restaurants, sight-seeing tours, best cream tea, etc.); and we usually have some special deals available just for our guests. We also offer (charged extra) towel hire, cottage cleaning, logs and kindling and a service wash and dry so that you can get the most from your golfing holiday.
The 18 hole golf courses at Ilfacombe and Woolacombe have some spectacular sea views. If you are interested in a course to USGA specification, there are two new parkland courses at Portmore just outside Barnstaple. The courses operated by Saunton Golf Club at Braunton Burrows (a beautiful area of natural dunes designated as a UNESCO Biosphere) are classic links with two championship courses; and the oldest links course in England, at the Royal North Devon Golf Club, sometimes called the 'St Andrews of the South', is beside the beach near Westward Ho!
For the non-golfers in your party, there are lots of other sporting activities available in North Devon, including swimming, clay pigeon shooting, quad biking, paint balling, coasteering, kayaking and horse riding. There are numerous local walks: some of the better known are at Tarr Steps, a prehistoric clapper bridge; Watersmeet, alongside a wooded river; Heddons Mouth, a glaciated valley leading to a pebbly beach; and the Valley of Rocks at Lynton, which has spectacular rock formations and a stunning coast path populated by wild goats.
There are many interesting places to visit nearby, such as Arlington Court, which has a famous carriage collection; Tiverton Castle, where you may meet with the engaging owners; medieval Dunster, which has a fascinating castle, a C13th dovecote and a charming C16th Yarn Market; Ilfracombe, which has an ancient harbour and Verity, a controversial sculpture by Damien Hirst; the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth, joined by a water powered cliff railway; and Clovelly, a quaint fishing village which is still privately owned.
Exmoor Cottage Holidays are perfect for your golfing holidays in North Devon. The cottages are charming, well-appointed, all have log fires and private gardens, and are surrounded by peaceful wildlife grounds. They are just a few minutes walk from an award winning traditional inn, and less than 30 minutes drive from some of the best golf courses (including links) in the UK.
