EXMOOR COTTAGE HOLIDAYS
Adventure holidays and activity holidays are very popular in North Devon and Exmoor which is more accessible than Cornwall, and less commercial than South Devon. You will be literally spoilt for choice, with many activities available nearby, including swimming, high ropes climbing, zorbing, kayaking, quad biking, coasteering, paint balling, horse riding, surfing, golfing, cycling, mountain biking, angling, fishing and clay pigeon shooting.
If you are looking for activity and adventure holidays in North Devon or Exmoor, and would like to stay in a stone-built self-catering cottage with a real fire and a private garden, then Exmoor Cottage Holidays is for you! The five character cottages, lovingly converted from a former farm, all have multi-fuel stoves and an enclosed private garden or patio right outside. The holiday letting cottages are surrounded by three acres of lovely wildlife grounds (with a delightful walk up Humphrey's Hill and an exclusive children's playground) and occupy a lovely position in the quiet and peaceful village of Challacombe, within the beautiful Exmoor National Park.
We live next door to the cottages, and are usually available to help with any enquiries (and feed the wild birds). When you arrive there will be a full basket of logs and kindling in the cottage and we usually have a BBQ, high-chair, cot, safety-gate or fire-guard available that you may use. We know Exmoor and North Devon well and are happy to show you the best places to visit on an OS map (which you may borrow) and recommend local activities and adventures (e.g. horse-riding, coasteering, paint-balling, quad biking, fishing trips, etc.) and services (e.g. taxi, massage and sports therapy, good restaurants) and often have special deals available just for our guests. We also offer (charged extra) towel hire, logs and kindling, cottage cleaning, and service wash and dry so that you can enjoy your chosen activities and adventures to the full.
Within just a couple of minutes walk is a friendly local shop which sells groceries, excellent home made cakes, snacks, alcohol, local guides and maps; and a traditional Inn, the Black Venus, which provides award winning food, real ales and fine wines.
There are numerous adventure activities available in North Devon, including high-ropes, zorbing and climbing at Abbotsham near Bideford; quad-bike riding, shooting and zorbing at Southdown Adventure; paint-balling and laser games at Yarnscombe near Barnstaple; kayaking, archery and climbing at Skern Lodge near Appledore and coasteering (a mixture of cliff walking and swimming) organised by Active Escape.
There are loads of places that provide horse-riding, with riding lessons for all abilities and hacks available through the countryside, woodland and along sandy beaches. Surfing is available all year round at Woolacombe and Saunton Sands, said to have the best surfing beaches in the UK. There are several professional golf courses nearby, including two links courses at Saunton, and the oldest links course in England at the Royal North Devon in Westward Ho!
There are miles and miles of unclassified lanes ideal for cycling, and many bridleways and off-road paths across Exmoor and along the coast suitable for mountain biking. For gentle cycling the Tarka Trail follows the route of an old railway line. You are spoilt for choice for coarse, sea, fly and game fishing and angling, with lots of options nearby, including Wistlandpound Reservoir for Brown Trout, which is only a few miles away from the cottages.
If you love walking, there are miles and miles of amazing walks in North Devon and Exmoor. Some of the most spectacular are those around Morte Point in Morthoe; along the top of the glaciated hills at Heddons Mouth; around the spectacular Valley of Rocks near Lynton; along the ridge of Countisbury Hill between Lynmouth and Porlock; and down to the hidden rocky beaches at Hartland Point and Woody Bay.
After an exhilarating day, where better to relax than in a cosy character cottage in front of a log fire, or in a traditional inn serving real ales and award-winning home made food? Exmoor Cottage Holidays is perfect for your adventure holidays and activity holidays in Exmoor and North Devon and we are more than happy to help you to organise the activity or adventure of your choice.
