Inglenook Cottage

Inglenook Cottage is the second largest holiday rental cottage for hire at Exmoor Cottage Holidays (after the Farmhouse) and has a spacious living room with an inglenook fireplace and log burner, separate well equipped kitchen (including a dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer) and three upstairs bedrooms that can very comfortably accommodate up to five people (+ cot).

Inglenook Cottage was known as an aulem (or "hall") in 1670, when it was two storeys high (unusual for North Devon at the time), but it may well have been built earlier. The windows were enlarged in the late C18th, and the living room ceiling raised. The living room retains its impressive original stone inglenook fireplace (which has a bread oven and salt safe) and the double bedroom has a lovely Georgian fireplace.

Inglenook Cottage faces south and has a large living room with a special timeless charm that comes with age. The cottage was completely renovated in 2010 with a new kitchen, bathroom and third bedroom. The windows were double glazed and the roof and external walls insulated. The furnishings and decorations are all in a traditional style and where possible old features have been retained.

There is a fully enclosed private garden to the rear with built in stone seating and a garden area to the front with a picnic table. There is plenty of parking on site nearby.

Inglenook Cottage has a well equipped kitchen with everything you need (electric oven, hob, hood, fridge with large freezer compartment, toaster, kettle, crockery and cutlery, etc.) and many extras such as microwave, cafetiere, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. An iron and ironing board, a mop and bucket and a Henry hoover are provided in the cupboard under the stairs. Heating is from electric night storage radiators; an instant electric heater in the bath room; and optionally, a log stove in the sitting room. Hot water is provided by an immersion heater.

The living room overlooks the front garden and has a log burner in the inglenook fireplace, digital Freeview TV, a DVD/CD player, plenty of comfortable seating and a dining table with chairs. The two larger bedrooms face south overlooking the peaceful courtyard.

The double bedroom has a built in wardrobe, a chest of drawers, shaver plug, bedside tables & lamps and a Georgian fireplace (not in use). The second bedroom has a ziplink bed that can be arranged either as a superking size bed or two singles. This bedroom also has a large chest of drawers and bedside tables and lamps. The third bedroom, a single facing east, has a dressing table, drawer space under the bed and a bedside table and lamp.

The beds are all made for your arrival with duvets, pillows and fresh linen (blankets also provided). The bathroom has a bath, separate shower cubicle with 8.5kW electric shower, WC, towel rail and hand basin.

Inglenook Cottage is provided with a full basket of logs and kindling; cleaning materials and cloths; a vacuum cleaner; a Welcome Pack with a few essentials – tea, coffee, sugar, fresh milk, shampoo, conditioner, toilet roll, bin liner, laundry liquid and dishwasher tablets; and tea towels, dishcloths and hand-soap. There is free WiFi in the cottage, with sufficient broadband to watch films (the site has 100mbs fibre-optic connection), a comprehensive information book (with details of the cottage and surrounding area) and a selection of books, games and attraction leaflets.

In the delightful grounds is a lovely walk around Humphrey’s Hill, an exclusive children’s playground, and a wild-flower meadow ideal for exercising your dogs. There is a bird-feeder outside each cottage (filled regularly), tame ducks on the pond, and you may help yourself to any of the fruits and herbs growing in the grounds (not everything is edible, please ask if unsure).

We try to keep our impact on the environment to a minimum and have recently installed photo-voltaic solar panels on the roofs. We recycle everything we can, and compost food waste and ashes on our own compost heap. Firewood for logs and kindling is sustainably sourced from our grounds or a local forest. We use the minimum of bleach and anti-bacterial cleaners, and provide eco-friendly hand-soap in Inglenook Cottage that is hypo-allergenic and kind to the environment.

We know North Devon and Exmoor well and are always happy to show you the best walks and places to visit on an Ordnance Survey map (which you may borrow) and recommend local attractions and services (e.g. historic buildings, guided tours, good restaurants, horse-riding, fishing trips, etc.). We often have special deals arranged just for our guests; and usually offer (charged extra) more logs and kindling, towel hire, service wash and dry and cottage cleaning.

Exmoor Cottage Holidays is ideal for your self-catering holidays in North Devon or Exmoor. Inglenook Cottage is comfortable, well equipped and characterful; with an inglenook fireplace, log-burning stove and enclosed rear patio garden. There is a children's playground in the grounds and a delightful walk around Humphrey's Hill. Challacombe village is charming and just 300 yards from Inglenook cottage is a pub with excellent food and a handy shop. We look forward to welcoming you to Inglenook Cottage soon!
