ABOUT US
We are a husband and wife team with four children and several pets. We have been in the holiday letting business for over twelve years and previously owned a holiday caravan park which we developed into the first five star park in North Devon. We bought Town Tenement Farm because of its fantastic atmosphere and peaceful location. We are attracted by the ideals of self-sufficiency and "the good life" and try to combine these with our business.
Our mission - "We aim to provide good quality holiday accommodation, in a safe, welcoming and pleasant environment, with an emphasis on comfort, good decorations, furnishings and equipment, attractive surroundings, excellent customer service and sustainability."
QUALITY
We have chosen not to be quality graded, yet believe that we offer quality standards equivalent to 3-4 stars. Jokingly we say that we have "four castles". Seriously though, we have a commitment to quality with regard to the high standard of decoration and furniture in the cottages and the extra services that we provide.
SERVICES
We offer services not usually available in self-catering accommodation, including:-
Beds are made for your arrival with fresh linen.
Logs for the fire, electricity and heating are all free of charge.
Mid-stay cleaning services and linen changes are available (charged extra).
The cottages are provided with cloths, tea towels and a small complimentary supply of tea, coffee, sugar and milk, cleaning materials and toilet roll.
Comprehensive Information Book provided with details of the accommodation, grounds, Challacombe village and plenty of things to see and do in North Devon.
We are usually on site from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, and during this time you are welcome to use the laundry facilities free of charge. We welcome your approach at any time, to answer your questions and to help you plan your day.
We aim to provide and maintain enchanting gardens with lots of interest and variety, whilst preserving the charming rural atmosphere. We also have several apple trees and a vegetable garden with strawberries, raspberries and red-currants. When ripe you are welcome to help yourself to small samples, but for larger quantities we will make a small charge.
SAFETY
We take your safety very seriously. Every year we undertake a comprehensive Risk Assessment (available for your inspection) which includes:-
Assessing and guarding against accidents on site.
Flood - We are working towards minimising flood risk by adding extra banks and drains. We are registered with floodline to receive alerts.
Fire - We provide smoke detectors and fire extinguishers and fire blankets which are checked and certificated yearly. We also check the log fires, clean all flues and chimneys and service the Rayburn (in the Farmhouse) every year. All of these checks are logged.
Electrical - All portable appliances are checked every year and the results logged (every appliance is marked with our postcode and a unique number).
SUSTAINABILITY
We take what action we can to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, to recycle where possible, to manage the grounds responsibly, and to encourage wild flowers and wildlife.
The loft spaces in the cottages are insulated with over 300mm of Rockwool and the Gatehouse and Inglenook external walls are insulated with Airtech behind the plaster.
We encourage the use of logs for heating, which are carbon neutral. We cut the logs from our own trees on site. This helps to maintain our woodland (many of the tress we cut down are non-native sycamore) and eliminates the energy used for transport.
We encourage you to use the recycling bins for glass, plastic bottles, cans and newspapers. We also provide a metal bin for food waste, cardboard and ashes from the fire, which goes onto our compost heap. All of our garden waste is composted and the compost is used to enrich the soil and grow seedlings and cuttings.
We encourage wild flowers in the meadows and gardens and provide many nesting boxes for birds. We have a variety of flowers that attract bees and butterflies and some areas of the grounds are left wild to shelter and encourage wildlife. We also maintain a vegetable plot and have several productive fruit trees and bushes.
